The cast are made from plasticene over a balsa core. They needed to be relativly easy to animate and  in keeping with the atmosphere of the film, (we wern't attempting Wallace and Gromit!).  As they don't have legs they were easy to work with, and fortunately there are no steps in Holstenwall.
